Five Animations by Ali Akbar Sadeghi

Five Animations by Ali Akbar Sadeghi at UbuWeb Film & Video. "...Before there was an Iranian New Wave, there was Kanoon, which became an incubator for some of the country's most celebrated artists--including Ebrahim Forouzesh, Noureddin Zarrinkelk, and many of the protagonists of Iranian cinema, Sohrab Shahid-Sales, Abbas Kiarostami, and Amir Naderi among them. Ali Akbar Sadeghi, who is best known for pioneering a style that mixed traditional Persian coffeehouse painting with the surreal was a Kanoon leader. Featured here are five incredible and rare animations, four historical and one contemporary: Seven Cities (1971), The Rook (1974), Malek Khorshid (1975), Zal and Simorgh (1977) and Coalition (2004)."

Hipsters, Hustlers, and Handball Players: Leon Levinstein's New York Photographs, 1950–1980

Leon Levinstein... Street Scene: Man Glancing at Woman in Tee Shirt and Shorts, New York City (1970s, Gelatin silver print). From the exhibition Hipsters, Hustlers, and Handball Players: Leon Levinstein's New York Photographs, 1950–1980 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "...Leon Levinstein (American, 1910–1988), an unheralded master of street photography, is best known for his candid and unsentimental black-and-white figure studies made in New York City neighborhoods from Times Square and the Lower East Side to Coney Island. This exhibition, drawn exclusively from the Metropolitan's collection, will feature some forty photographs that reflect the artist's fearless approach to the medium. Levinstein's graphic virtuosity—seen in raw, expressive gestures and seemingly monumental bodies—is balanced by his unusual compassion for his offbeat subjects from the demimonde."

Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg

Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg at the National Gallery of Art. "...In the first scholarly exhibition of American poet Allen Ginsberg's photographs, all facets of his work in photography will be explored. Some 79 works on display will range from the 1950s "drugstore" prints to his now celebrated portraits of Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, snapshots of Ginsberg himself taken just before he achieved literary fame, and his later portraits of the Beats and other friends made in the 1980s and 1990s. Ginsberg (1926–1997) started taking photographs in 1953 when he purchased a small, secondhand Kodak camera. For the next decade he captured numerous intimate shots of himself as well as his friends and lovers. He abandoned photography in 1963 but returned to it in the early 1980s."

Rosalind Solomon: Ritual

Rosalind Solomon: Ritual at Bruce Silverstein Gallery. "...In Solomon’s work, the definition of a ritual, be that a cultural, religious, political, or ceremonial ritual, is called into question, and becomes easier and simultaneously more difficult to define when one considers Solomon’s images of human rites and ceremonies, parades and festivals, memorials and sacrifices. These images of cultural practices, both local and foreign, are united by the same impassioned witness, presented equally and without bias as Solomon searches for a personal understanding and reflection of her own human experience."

GUTSHOT: The Intuitive Photography of Jay King and Lee Balterman

GUTSHOT: The Intuitive Photography of Jay King and Lee Balterman at Stephen Daiter Gallery in Chicago, Il. "...GUTSHOT pairs two lifelong photographers born and raised in Chicago . Although Jay King (born 1944) and Lee Balterman (born 1920) each had a career in the editorial / commercial world, the heart and soul of their artistic achievements lie mainly in the images they created on their own, pictures they couldn’t not make. That work (covering a sixty year period) is largely concerned with responding to the people they encountered in public - from the lakefront and the Art Institute to Clark Street bars to Riverview Park and the surrounding neighborhoods. They recorded fans and players from the Coliseum to Comiskey Park to Wrigley Field and riders on the elevated and subways between. The majority of the more than fifty vintage silver prints is at once a tribute to the city in particular and to our common bond with people everywhere."
