1960, Bowden Spacelander
1960, Bowden Spacelander. "...Mike Spangler's 1960 Bowden Spacelander, featuring a fiberglass monocoque frame that allowed for very radical space-age styling. Benjamin Bowden designed this bike back in the 1940's and even produced an all aluminum prototype that appeared in trade magazines in 1949 but was not produced and sold until 1960. Today it is a well recognized icon of American bicycle history." From Dave's Vintage Bicycles.

Homeland Secuirty Series
Paul Shambroom... Playground Donald, "Terror Town" (2005, Playas Training Center, NM., Archival pigmented inkjet on paper) From the Homeland Secuirty Series. "...For my current project I am photographing training facilities, equipment and personnel involved in the massive government and private sector efforts to prepare for and respond to terrorist attacks within the nation’s borders. First responders and law enforcement officers train in large-scale simulated environments such as 'Disaster City' in Texas and 'Terror Town,' an abandoned mining community in New Mexico purchased with funds from the Department of Homeland Security. This work examines issues of fear, safety and liberty in post-9/11 America." From Paul Shambroom.
Elizabeth Huey: The Kirkbride Plan
Elizabeth Huey: The Kirkbride Plan at Feigen Contemporary. "...Elizabeth Huey's newest paintings are inspired by her research into American asylums of the 19th century and fueled by her personal experiences. Thomas Story Kirkbride was a key innovator of the science of psychiatry in the United States. Acting on a belief in the restorative effects of bucolic, edifying surroundings, Kirkbride developed a moralized set of blueprints for hospitals extending the concept of architecture as antidote for the mentally ill. His enlightened architectural legacy, along with the legislative efforts of social reformers like Dorothea Dix, set the standard for asylum construction and implementation in the 19th century.

Radio First Termer
DJ Dave Rabbit... What's Playing at the Local Theatres (Radio First Termer: Vietnam, Saigon, South Vietnam, January 1971, .mp2 audio 01:05). From Radio First Termer. "...According to legend, Dave Rabbit was a real life U.S. Air Force sergeant who either during or after his single tour of duty in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War rigged up an FM stereo transmitter sometime ca. 1971 to blast 'Hard Acid Rock Music To Blow [People's] Mind[s] With' and to help fuel the Vietnam counterculture that coarsed through the ranks of disenchanted U.S. service men and women in the later years of the Vietnam War. It is believed that someone recorded one of the few shows of Radio First Termer and upon returning to the United States, duplicated the recording, and sold copies of it through a classified advertisement in Rolling Stone magazine in the early 1970s. Although sale of the original copy of the only-surviving recording of Radio First Termer eventually ceased, fans of the charismatic Dave Rabbit apparently duplicated the recording and shared it from friend-to-friend over the years. It is also believed that the one show from 1971 that is featured on this site is the only surviving recording of the original Radio First Termer."

Marinetti: Oh, What a Futurist War
Jori Finkel... Marinetti: Oh, What a Futurist War (New York Times, August 27, 2006). "...Few men in the history of adrenaline have been as excited by the sights and sounds of war as F. T. Marinetti. He celebrated war as the 'the world’s only hygiene,' he made machine guns a subject of his poetry, and he exploded the traditional form of the printed poem to reflect his pumped-up, down-with-the-old attitude.
One of his most explosive poems is 'Après la Marne, Joffre Visita le Front en Auto' from 1915. While the title refers to a French general’s visit by car to the front after the Battle of the Marne, in which his troops kept the Germans at bay during World War I, the poem simulates the energy and cacophony of the battlefield."

Cigarette Cards: ABCs
Vivex Colour Photo Instantaneus Camera (Cigarette card, Age of Power and Wonder, published ca. 1935-1938). From Cigarette Cards: ABCs. "...The cigarette card series in this digital presentation comprise just the beginning of the Library's extensive, international collection of tobacco cards, which now numbers more than 125,000 individual items, including more than 3000 complete sets. While bibliophile George Arents (1875-1960) did not collect cigarette cards, he provided an endowment for the continued growth of his comprehensive collection on tobacco (whose processing and packaging had provided his fortune), which he had begun donating to NYPL in 1944. In addition to literature and artworks, the tobacco collection's scope has come to encompass a wide range of visual materials and printed ephemera associated with that commodity. The cigarette cards were acquired by curators in the 1960s and later."

Marlene Dumas
Marlene Dumas... Die Baba (1985, Oil on Canvas on Linen). "...Bathed in sickly blue-yellow light, Marlene Dumas's baby is almost repellent. Instead of an instant love affair, Dumas paints an alien encounter, the unnerving presence of an ‘other', the realisation of an individual with a will and determination of his own. Marlene Dumas confronts the reality of motherhood, with all its natural and terrifying implications." From Marlene Dumas at the The Saatchi Gallery. Also... Rephotographing Atget
Lens Culture... Rephotographing Atget - photos and text by Christopher Rauschenberg. "...Eugene Atget documented Paris from 1888 until his death in 1927. Like many people, I consider him to have been the greatest photographer of all time. Atget straightforwardly documented the city with photographs that give you the feeling that all the transitory things that people do and are have washed away, leaving only their transcendent accomplishments.
On a 1989 trip to Paris, I suddenly found myself face to face with a spiral-topped gatepost that I knew very well from a beautiful photograph by Atget (the photograph on the left). I rephotographed his gatepost from memory (the photograph on the right) and wondered how many other Atget subjects might still be holding their poses." Also... Have You Seen This Madison? - James T. Potter's Photos
James T. Potter... Detail of Orpheum Marquee (March 28, 1971). "...A detail of the top of the flashing baroque marquee on the Orpheum Theater at 216 State Street." From Have You Seen This Madison? - James T. Potter's Photos. "...James T. Potter, an architect and native Madisonian, combined his architectural background and his skills as a photographer into a photo feature for the Wisconsin State Journal. His popular column "Have You Seen This Madison?" ran in the Sunday paper from 1969 until 1977. The photographs captured the unusual and the ordinary, concentrating on architectural details that often went unnoticed by the casual observer.
The series originated from a slide lecture Potter gave often in the 1960s to schools, clubs and church groups. According to a quote from him in the Wisconsin State Journal on 2 January 1972, 'The whole point... is to prove to people that they haven't seem the city they live in... Madison has great physical beauty, but many people don't see it.'"

Hong Kong Government Posters
Hong Kong Government Posters. "...Though totally unprepared, Hong Kong accepted a massive influx of refugees from China in the early 1950s. The dramatic increase in population, poor living conditions and poverty had certainly created many social and health problems. To prevent the spread of disease and social ills, the government was in urgent need of an effective communication tool to reach and educate the public. The decision of using posters to publicize social campaigns and policies was made in the early 1950s primarily on the ground of economy and efficacy. The Public Relations Office, predecessor of the Government Information Services Department, was responsible for designing most of these promotional posters."

Maureen Is A Champ
Frank Sinatra... Maureen Is A Champ (Apple #1, 1968, .mp3 audio 04:28) - commissioned by Apple executive Peter Brown, in honor of Maureen Starkey's 22nd birthday. "...Ringo Starr's wife (Maureen) had a birthday coming up and someone at Apple Records thought it would be great to work up a version of the song The Lady Is A Tramp to play at her birthday party. One thing led to another and a famous Hollywood composer agreed to rewrite the words to the song, then talked Frank Sinatra into singing it. Sinatra (who was a fan of Beatle songs) recorded this version of The Lady Is A Tramp with a band, shipped the tapes to London, where it was pressed onto Apple #1. One copy of the record was made and given to Maureen (Cox) Starr, and the stamping molds were all destroyed afterward." From Probe is Turning-on the People.

J. Bennett Fitts: No Lifeguard on Duty at Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. "...For this stunningly calm and exotic series, J. Bennett Fitts uses the qualities of light to create a unified vision of a man-altered landscape: abandoned pools. J. Bennett Fitts has traveled over 20,000 miles around the United States from Salton Sea, California and the Southern California Inland Empire to Arkansas and West Virginia to photograph relics of America’s roadside past. He expresses the contrast between the of the period when these motels were new and attracted the Great American family touring the U.S.A and their modern state: attracting only budget travelers and sites for prostitution and drug use, perhaps even manufacture." Serpentine Swimmers Club
Lens Culture... Serpentine Swimmers Club - photos by Andrew Buurman. "...The Serpentine Swimmers Club is a group of about 40 hearty people of all ages and all walks of life who meet each weekend at an urban lake in London's Hyde Park to swim and race in near-freezing waters.
British photographer Andrew Buurman swam with the group (once), and then returned often to photograph these people doing what they feel driven to do. The result, I think, is a remarkable testimony to the accomplishments of people who willfully defy the deathly cold by celebrating their own vigorous bodies, the joy of burning muscles, and the satisfaction of not surrendering to aging bodies nor to the creature comforts of modern day life."

Charles W. Cushman Photograph Collection
Charles W. Cushman... Kite Flying Along South Main Street (Feb. 1940, Tucson, AZ). From the Charles W. Cushman Photograph Collection at the Indiana University Archives. "...Packing his car with camera, lenses, and film, his tripod, his notebooks and - often as not - his first wife, Jean (who was not, to judge from the expression on her face in Cushman's occasional carside portraits, always a happy traveling companion), this extraordinary amateur photographer pursued a life on the road, and in the streets, of mid-twentieth-century America. Whatever its effect upon his marriage, Cushman's peripatetic compulsion did result in a remarkable gift to future historians, photography lovers, and students of Americana. For here, framed through the lens of his Contax IIA camera, saturated in almost embarrassingly vivid colors, springs to life a world that we had long since resigned ourselves to viewing only in shades of gray. The America that we thought we knew, whether through the self-conscious artistic starkness of the images of Berenice Abbott and Walker Evans or through the polished middle-brow poses of Look and Life, is revealed as being but the shadow of a world no less full and tangible than our own. In Cushman's work the past becomes, for an instant, impossibly present."

A Handful of Dust: Photographs of Disappearing America
David Plowden... A Handful of Dust: Photographs of Disappearing America. "...Since making his earliest documentary photographs in the 1950’s, David Plowden has honored those proud structures and places that America has discarded—from brawny commercial and industrial centers to small towns and farms. He reveres the honest work and spirit that built them. But the scene has changed much in the last five decades and what’s left of the honesty of small communities and the working of the land is all but gone, dealt a death blow by outsourcing, conglomerization, and our incessant drive to buy cheap at any cost. The America of these photographs is a bittersweet reminder of things once cherished, and a life no longer possible. Deserted Main Streets and crumbling facades stare at us blindly. Abandoned houses and buildings reach back to ground. Plowden’s work is a sad symphony---incomparably and irresistably beautiful, while reminding us of our loss." From David Plowden Photographs.

A Tumultuous Assembly: Visual Poems of the Italian Futurists
A Tumultuous Assembly: Visual Poems of the Italian Futurists at the Getty Center, Research Institute Exhibition Gallery. "...In 1909 a handful of Italian artists and poets published a manifesto for a new movement called Futurism. The artists declared that scientific and technological inventions of the modern world had altered concepts of time and space, causing a deep change in the human psyche. Traditional cultural institutions, they asserted, must be destroyed and new ones created. Futurists followed this with manifestos calling for the reinvention of everything from painting, music, and architecture to cooking, warfare, and government."

Eclectic Shadows: The Rediscovery of Yasuzo Masumura
Firecracker Magazine #12... Eclectic Shadows: The Rediscovery of Yasuzo Masumura. "...It is well known that Japanese cinema of the sixties was incredibly rich and diverse, with such figures as Akira Kurosawa, Yoshujiru Ozu and Hiroshi Teshigahara all working at the height of their significant powers in a variety of different styles and genres. The recent touring programme of films by Yasuzo Masumura, curated by the Independent Cinema Office, adds a new name to this already heady mix, as well as marking the first chance for English cineastes to see the films of an intriguing and prolific director. Masumura worked firmly within the studio system, making between three or four films per year for Daiei throughout his thirty year career.
